A Park Ranger explained these deep scratches were not recent vandalism but rather representative of what one of the older American Indian nomadic tribes tended to do to mark their passage. Apparently there is some speculation this might have been linked to entering the spirit realm, a concept I found more terrifying the longer I gazed at the results.
