The aboriginal people in the area used to tattoo a wide mask on women to mark when they had come of age (assuming they passed the tests). Our host was native Taroko and had been educated and worked in Tiapei. He said the Japanese didn't allow the tattoos to be done, and since they're hugely painful to get, even though people are allowed to again nobody does.
