Lessons from the Master
William "Deafy" Boular is the very human embodiment of the Kansas motto, Ad Astra Per Aspera: "To the Stars Through Difficulties." A champion bricklayer - once featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not for laying 46,000 paving bricks in less than 8 hours - Boular overcame adversity to literally lay the foundation for those who came after him. An illness at 4-years-old left him deaf & unable to speak - then at age 10, hit by a train his legs were cut off below the knee. But he did not let his difficulties define him - becoming a productive & energetic worker known for his special boots and affectionately called "Deafy" by the people of Atchinson.
