Notes from the 3/30/99 Interview with
Kevan Wogoman
Plans for the future:
FIBER!!! Kevan was all for using fiber to extend the network to
off-campus locations. He thought it'd be no problem running it under '40,
just a matter of some permissions, which might take a while. He mentioned
that most of the cable (espeically along roads) would be run above ground
using RP&L's poles. We should see how long the signal travels in
multi-mode & single mode fiber. Chris Hardie mentioned that RP&L has some
fiber running to the mini-plant by Warren and Wilson dorms.
As far as the future of on campus plans, there is a hope to move from star
to ring topology in a few years.
The subnets have no restrictions, save for the student subnet which does
not allow Netware access. The building are hooked up to the subnets as
follows (incomplete list):
Tyler: Faculty
Dennis: Faculty, Public
Stanley: Faculty(?)
Runyan: Faculty, Admin.
Carpenter: Faculty (upper 2 floors), Admin (lower 2 floors)
Dorms: all Student
Kevan would like to be able to see web traffic as well as e-mail (port 25
of Yang). He mentioned using NDG's EtherBoy/PacketBoy packages, but they
cost several thousand dollars, so ECS doesn't have them.
